The One Ocean Foundation announces partnership with Recreation and Parks Association of Nunavut

Vancouver, October 31st, 2017– Canada’s leading expedition cruise specialist, One Ocean Expeditions (OOE), launched a burgeoning new partnership with the Recreation and Parks Association of Nunavut (RPAN) to support youth leadership, health and development in Nunavut.

Since 2012, RPAN has been developing programs focused on leadership training, mentorship, and certification to support emerging young leaders in building inclusive, year-round sport and recreation programs across the North. RPAN recently launched NU Play this Fall, to extend their popular Get Happy Summer Day Camp model into after school programs through the winter. RPAN is a not-for-profit led by a dedicated team steadfastly working with partners and government to advocate territorial support for healthy and activities communities through recreation.

The partnership was formally announced on October 14th, 2017 at RPAN’s fifth annual Recreation and Sport Leadership Conference in Iqaluit, Nunavut. As a new beneficiary of The One Ocean Foundation, RPAN will receive financial contributions enabling them to further build on training and certification support for communities, while improving their organizational structure, marketing, and building of strategic partnerships. This work will increase the reach and impact of RPAN’s sport and recreation programs across the North.

“We are thrilled to launch this new partnership and be able to back RPAN’s passionate leaders in their vision for healthy, active communities in the North” said Cathy Lawton, General Manager at One Ocean Expeditions. “A core component of our business is supporting the communities in which we visit, and we can see how RPAN’s capacity building programs are having significant, long-term impact on youth and communities across the territory”.

“OOE’s support provides increased opportunity for emerging leaders to develop skills, identify career paths, be part of a successful team, gain casual/seasonal employment, and feel valued in their communities” said Dawn Currie, Executive Director of RPAN. “Most importantly, One Ocean Expeditions will be a partner in making a difference in the communities and lives of Nunavummiut. We will together support healthier and more active communities”.

The recent RPAN Conference in Iqaluit focused on collaborative training and support for youth leaders and coaches across the territory, and featured an Awards Gala to recognize exceptional youth and coaches, as well as the announcement of new partnerships and the launch of RPAN’s latest program- NU play. As a new partner, One Ocean Expeditions attended the Conference to collaborate with RPAN directors and youth leaders and brainstorm increased opportunities for partnership.

Since its establishment in 2007, One Ocean Expeditions has been contributing to programs aligned with the company’s core values of education, exploration, science, socioeconomic development, and sustainable tourism. The One Ocean Foundation was established in early 2017 to house the growing financial contributions from both passengers and One Ocean Expeditions. A range of select beneficiaries and key programs are supported under The One Ocean Foundation, including The Royal Canadian Geographical Society, Vancouver Aquarium, Vancouver Maritime Museum, Oceanites, South Georgia Heritage Trust, Scott Polar Research Institute, and the California Ocean Alliance.
