Get Happy Summer Day Camp - Application 2025

The Recreation & Parks Association of Nunavut (RPAN) is pleased to once again be hosting the Get Happy Summer Day staff training program in 2025. Our most successful program, we have grown from five communities in our pilot year, and in 2025, we anticipate up to 14 communities participating.

 

At this time, we are planning for in person staff training. Training will be in Iqaluit, June 16 – 20, 2025 including travel days.

 

Youth leaders plus one supervisor/recreation coordinator will attend three-day training sessions that will provide training as leaders and develop skills they can use to create positive change in the communities through physical activity, creative arts and sport, and through the implementation of a six - eight (6 -8) week summer day camps for children ages 5 – 12 years.  Youth leaders will participate in a variety of interactive workshops and activities that will prepare them to implement their Get Happy Summer Day Camp programs, a project aimed at improving the lives of children and youth in their communities.  

 

Participants will also receive training and certification First Aid. Training will also be hosted with the Jays Care Foundation supporting a fun baseball program in day camps. We are also looking to add training to include new partners and programming.  

 

At the conclusion of the training week, participants will be fully prepared, confident, excited and skilled to return to their home communities to deliver quality summer day camps.  This includes daily activity plans, equipment and arts/crafts/snack check lists, registration forms and promotional material.

 

Junior Leader Program

We are implementing a new initiative for the 2025 Get Happy Summer Day Camp program.  The Junior Leader Program is aimed at any individuals aged 13-15 to be Junior Leader.  We’ve identified a gap in the program and want to ensure members who have aged out have an opportunity to be a future leader.  Recreation leaders and youth leaders who participate in the training will be able to assist Junior Leaders when they return to their communities.

Purpose and Objectives

The purpose of this project is to provide support and training to communities in the Nunavut for the successful implementation of a summer day camp program for children ages 5-12 years.  This includes providing training and resources to summer staff, as well as equipment and craft supplies and resource materials.

 

The project objectives include:

  • Provide basic training and certification in First Aid to summer staff;

  • Provide training to support communities hosting a quality summer day camp program;

  • Provide training to implement a Jays Care program into day camps.

  • Provide student summer employment (including training week)

  • Provide quality summer programs for children

  • Develop effective partnerships with those currently providing services in the community related to youth.

  • Provide resources necessary for the implementation of day camps.

  • Provide equipment and supplies needed to deliver successful programs.

 

LEADING THE WAY OVERVIEW

 

WHAT IS LEADING THE WAY (LTW)?

  • LTW Get Happy Summer Day Camps will provide training and resources for youth 16-22 years of age.

  • LTW will provide all equipment, craft supplies, resources and training needed to deliver successful programs.

HOW DO COMMUNITIES BECOME INVOLVED IN LTW – GET HAPPY SUMMER DAY CAMP?​

  • Application and support letter for the Get Happy Summer Day Camp program must be received by March 15th, 2025.

  • Confirmation space for day camp use for a period of 6-8 weeks must be included in the letter

  • Supervisors must dedicate time for monthly conference calls.

  • All summer day camp staff will need to have a CRC/VSC by prior to training

  • All youth leaders and the recreation coordinator will be required to attend the June training session.

WHAT RESOURCES WILL BE SUPPLIED WITH LTW GET HAPPY SUMMER DAY CAMP?

RPAN WILL:

  • Cover 100% of all training costs including: travel, accommodations, food, certification (for up to 4 youth leaders and the recreation coordinator) 

  • Will book all flights.

  • Purchase art and craft supplies for each community

  • Provide support to each community for snacks and drinks

  • Provide participant t-shirts for each community

  • Provide staff clothing 

  • Provide first aid kits

  • Provide all resources to participating communities

  • Purchase day camp equipment

 

HAMLETS WILL:

  • Apply for summer student wage assistance

  • Recruit and hire summer day camp staff, including one “leader/supervisor”

  • Allocate a suitable space to host the day camp program (community hall, arena, etc)

  • Host a minimum 6-8 week camp program

  • Participate in evaluation at end of summer program

  • Pay staff wages during training week

  • Budget for any additional “hosting” costs 

  • Apply on grants for additional funding to support the program in your community

 

It is important to note, communities participating in the Get Happy Summer Day Camp program are required to complete training evaluations and end of season program evaluations.  Supervisors are also required to participate in all conference call meetings.

 

100% participation in training is required!

 

Hamlet MUST be in good standing with RPAN. Any Hamlets owing money or reports will not be considered for participation until paid in full.  Hamlets MUST be RPAN members for the April 2024 – March 2025 year.

HOW CAN COMMUNITIES PARTICIPATE IN THE LTW GET HAPPY SUMMER DAY CAMP?

  1. COMPLETE THE APPLICATION BELOW.

  2. HAVE ALL LETTERS OF SUPPORT AND DOCUMENTS ATTACHED WITH THE APPLICATION.

  3. DEADLINE FOR APPLICATION IS: March 15th, 2025.
